【Writing on Horsfield's Catalogue of the mammals in the East India Company Museum on a copy to Theodore Edward Cantor】Thomas Horsfield (May 12, 1773–July 24, 1859) 是位美國醫生、也是自然學者，出生於費城，並在賓州大學習醫。他在1800年代前往爪哇旅遊數年並在當地行醫，東印度公司在1811年從荷蘭手中接管爪哇， Horsfield即代表他的朋友 Thomas Stamford Raffles 採集動物和植物。1819年他因為健康因素被迫離開爪哇，到倫敦擔任東印度公司Leadenhall Street博物館的管理員、爾後成為館藏經理。他在1824年撰寫了爪哇與鄰近島嶼的動物研究（Zoological Researches in Java and the Neighbouring Islands），也與Nicholas Aylward Vigors一起進行鳥類分類，在他們最著名的發表”林奈學會的澳洲鳥類收藏之描述”（A description of the Australian birds in the collection of the Linnean Society）中嘗試以鳥類的自然相似度作排列(Trans. Linn. Soc. Lond. (1827))。他也和植物學家Robert Brown and John Joseph Bennett 一起發表了Plantae Javanicae rariores (1838–52)。在1826年倫敦動物學會成立時，他被指派為助理秘書，1828年獲選為皇家學會的會員， 1833年他奠基了倫敦皇家昆蟲學會的前身。許多動物以 Horsfield被命名以紀念他的貢獻，例如荷氏家蠶 Bombyx horsfieldi (Moore, 1860) 、 Anoplophora horsfieldi (Kriesche, 1925) 荷菲氏星天牛、爪哇飛鼠 Iomys horsfieldii、霍氏鼠耳蝠 Cynopterus horsfieldi 與馬拉巴嘯鶇 Myophonus horsfieldii。
